Blame it on the mushrooms, morel mushrooms that is. Every spring Cody, along with her mom and two sisters, spent countless hours combing the forests of Ohio for these seasonal treasures. Her love of plants blossomed during this time. Like most college freshman, she entered the University of Toledo undecided. She soon found her path though, and four years later graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science. After graduation, Cody pursued her love of plants and adventure out west, taking an internship in Yellowstone National Park. Working in the park alerted her to the importance of preserving natural habitat and the effects invasive plants can have on an ecosystem. The season seemed all too short and soon she found herself just over the continental divide in Idaho. In Idaho, Cody worked as a seasonal Park Ranger at Harriman State Park and was able to continue her habitat restoration work. In the fall of 2009, she exchanged her mountains for the ocean and knapweed for Brazilian pepper when she moved to the Florida Keys to work as IRC’s Exotic Strike Team Program Coordinator. Now she happily devotes all her time to restoring natural habitat by removing invasive exotic plants.
