Historia y distribución/History and distribution: Una hierba sufrútice, rara, en el norte de Puerto Rico en elevaciones bajas. Principales regiones geográficas conforme a Axelrod (2011): Llanuras Costeras del Norte (Dorado, Vega Baja, Manatí). Áreas botánicamente únicas conforme a Axelrod (2011): Laguna Tortuguero. Crece solo en arenas silíceas blancas, mayormente en la vecindad de Laguna Tortuguero en Vega Baja y Manatí, pero también ha sido reportada para Dorado en donde está probablemente extirpada (Woodbury et al. 1975, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2015).

A rare suffrutescent herb in northern Puerto Rico at low elevations. Major geographical regions following Axelrod (2011): Northern Coastal Lowlands (Dorado, Vega Baja, Manatí). Botanically unique areas following Axelrod (2011): Laguna Tortuguero. It occurs only on white silica sands, mostly in the vicinity of Laguna Tortuguero in Vega Baja and Manatí, but has also been reported for Dorado where is likely extirpated (Woodbury et al. 1975, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2015).

This was first listed as a rare species in Puerto Rico by Woodbury et al. (1975), who classified it as an endangered species endemic to Puerto Rico (species No. 20), and it was listed as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1990 under the Endangered Species Act. It was listed as a Critical Element by DNER in 1988, 1999 (as critically imperiled) and 2007. It was included as a species of global conservation concern by the Center for Plant Conservation (1992), who ranked it as a priority A species (a taxon at risk of global extinction within 5 years). It was included as a species known from three or fewer locations in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Figueroa Colón & Woodbury (1996), but not as a species known from a single locality by Figueroa Colón (1996).
