Native to the New World tropic, but specific origin uncertain; reported as native to the West Indies (Hispaniola), Central America (Nicaragua) and South America (Colombia); or to South America; perhaps native to other regions of the New World tropic; reported as naturalized in the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico; although Howard (1979) did not explicitly treat this as naturalized in the Lesser Antilles, and Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong (2012, 2015) treat it as native there, it is classified as introduced in the Plants of the Eastern Caribbean website (see link below).
