Natives For Your Neighborhood was initiated early 2000s, using data collected as part of IRC's Floristic Inventory of South Florida (FISF) project. Like the FISF, it was designed to improve native plant conservation programs and ecological restoration projects throughout the region. George D. Gann, Melissa E. Abdo, Joyce W. Gann, G. Donald Gann, Sr., Steven W.
Woodmansee, Keith A. Bradley, Emilie Grahl and Kirsten N. Hines published the first version of Natives For Your Neighborhood in 2005, and that authorship was maintained through 2017. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our founding major sponsors, without whom Natives For Your Neighborhood would not have been possible: the South Florida Water Management District, Broward County, Elizabeth Ordway Dunn Foundation, Florida Native Plant Society and the US Fish and Wildlife Service - Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
Natives For Your Neighborhood was originally designed for the 10 southernmost counties of Florida. Due to the popularity of this important tool, IRC is partnering with the Florida Wildflower Foundation and others to bring NFYN to the entire state. To date, we have entered preliminary data as far north as Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, Okeechobee and Indian River counties.
