Description:
A medium-sized bird measuring up to 23 inches in length. The male is brilliant red and the female is tan. A large crest on the head, a heavy, conical red bill, and a face surrounded by black.
Range:
Resident in North America, Central America, the West Indies, and Hawaii.
Habitat(s):
Forest edges, areas with shrubs, swamps, gardens, and suburban areas.
Reproduction:
1 to 5 buff eggs are laid in a cup of twigs concealed in a thicket.
Food:
This species feeds on seeds, fruits, buds, and insects.
Comments:
This species often comes to bird feeders. Can be found in South Florida year round.
