General Landscape Uses: Wildflower gardens.

Availability: Grown by enthusiasts.

Description: Perennial wildflower 0.5-3 feet tall forming colonies from creeping rhizomes. Reddish stems somewhat woody at the base with leathery, linear leaves 2-8 inches long. Violet or purple ray flowers with a yellow center.

Dimensions: 1-3 feet in height, typically as broad as tall.

Range: South-central United States to Escambia, Washington, and Liberty counties.

Habitats: Praries, woods

Soils: Moist, well-drained sandy or limestone soils, without humus.

Salt Water Tolerance: Low; does not tolerate long-term flooding by salt or brackish water.

Salt Wind Tolerance: Low; salt wind may burn the leaves.

Drought Tolerance: High; does not require any supplemental water once established.

Light Requirements: Full sun.

Flower Color: Purple

Flower Characteristics: Showy.

Flowering Season: Summer to fall.

Wildlife and Ecology: Attracts pollinators.
