General Landscape Uses: Primarily recommended for natural landscapes and habitat restorations. Also an accent or specimen shrub.

Availability: Commonly available at native plant nurseries in central Florida. Available at native plant nurseries in northeast Florida.

Description: Medium to large herbaceous wildflower.

Dimensions: 2-4 feet in height.

Growth Rate: Slow.

Range: Eastern and central United States west to Texas and south to Palm Beach and Lee counties.

Habitats: Dry pinelands.

Soils: Moist, well-drained sandy soils, without humus.

Nutritional Requirements: Low; it grows in nutrient poor soils.

Salt Water Tolerance: Low; does not tolerate flooding by salt or brackish water.

Salt Wind Tolerance: Low; salt wind may burn the leaves.

Drought Tolerance: High; does not require any supplemental water once established.

Light Requirements: Full sun.

Flower Color: White.

Flower Characteristics: Showy.

Flowering Season: Spring.

Fruit: Capsule.

Wildlife and Ecology: Provides moderate amounts of food and cover for wildlife. Larval host plant for yucca giant skipper (Megathymus yuccae) butterflies.
